Protective film helps prevent scratches and surface damage during processing, transportation, and installation. However, the thickest or most adhesive film is not always the best choice.
The correct film must match the stainless steel finish, fabrication method, storage conditions, and expected removal time.
Terms such as “7C,” “10C,” or “12.5C” are commonly used in China to describe approximate film thickness. However, thickness alone does not determine the film’s performance.
A complete film specification should include:
- Film material and thickness
- Adhesion level
- Film color
- Plain or custom-logo printing
- Applicable stainless steel finish
- Required cutting or bending process
- Recommended removal period
A thicker film provides better mechanical protection, but it does not necessarily have stronger adhesion. Likewise, higher adhesion may reduce edge lifting but can also make the film difficult to remove.
Different decorative surfaces require different protective films.
Mirror stainless steel easily shows adhesive marks, bubbles, and film impressions. It normally requires a clean and easily removable film.
Hairline, No.4, and Satin finishes may need stronger adhesion because their textured surfaces reduce the contact area between the sheet and the film.
PVD-colored stainless steel must be tested using the final colored surface. The coating, cleaning process, and anti-fingerprint treatment can all affect adhesion.
Embossed or sandblasted sheets usually require a film suitable for rougher surfaces to prevent lifting during processing and transportation.
A highly adhesive film may stay firmly attached during cutting and bending, but excessive adhesion can cause:
- Difficult film removal
- Adhesive residue
- Visible marks on mirror surfaces
- Damage to sensitive PVD finishes
- Removal problems after long storage
- Increased adhesion after exposure to heat or sunlight
For important orders, the film should be tested on the actual production surface. The test should check adhesion, processing performance, edge lifting, removal force, and any residue or color change.
Some decorative stainless steel projects use an imported protective film directly on the sheet, followed by a second custom-logo film.
This double-layer system provides additional protection and displays the customer’s brand. However, the two films must be tested together.
The outer logo film must adhere securely to the back of the first film. If its adhesion is too low, it may lift during processing. If it is too high, it may distort the first layer or create removal problems.
The supplier should confirm:
- Compatibility between the two films
- Whether the layers move during cutting or bending
- The correct removal sequence
- Combined film thickness
- Edge-lifting performance
Testing each film separately does not guarantee that the complete double-layer system will work correctly.
Not every protective film is suitable for laser cutting. An unsuitable film may melt, shrink, lift, or leave residue around the cutting edge.
Before production, confirm whether the film is suitable for CO₂ or fibre-laser cutting. A transparent protective film is not automatically a laser-compatible film.
The film should be tested using the customer’s actual cutting method whenever possible.
Protective film mainly protects the surface of the stainless steel sheet. It cannot prevent edge damage, moisture exposure, or movement inside the wooden package.
Export packing should also include:
- Strong wooden crates or frames
- Edge and corner protection
- Waterproof wrapping
- Secure internal fixing
- Clear quantity and specification labels
- Grain-direction and installation markings
Mirror and PVD sheets should be inspected individually before packing to identify bubbles, scratches, lifted film, or particles trapped underneath.
Protective film: PE film with removable adhesive, suitable for the specified stainless steel finish and fabrication process. The film must remain stable during cutting and bending and be removable without visible residue within the agreed storage period. Final approval is subject to testing on the production sample.
The safest approach is to approve the protective film together with the actual stainless steel finish, rather than selecting it only according to thickness or adhesion.
